MoveHer Fitness Grand Opening Celebration

MoveHer Fitness is a women’s only gym in Burbank CA that encourages women to work out together while learning strength training, self-defense, and the power of stretching and flexibility. The gym features kickboxing, strength training, and “animal flow” which is a stretching exercise sequence similar to yoga. This fitness center is located on the second floor and features a well-lit and ventilated space that is painted with a very original contemporary design. MoveHer Fitness has a large selection of kettlebell weights and kickboxing targets for the various classes. MoveHer Fitness evolved out of a dream founder April do Nascimento had when she was coaching cheerleaders as a volunteer at John Muir Middle School in Burbank. Mrs. do Nascimento envisioned a fitness center where women who had little to no experience working out could find a safe and enabling environment to work out together and learn to be physically fit for the first time. The company just started during the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic but Mrs. do Nascimento resourcefully switched the group classes to outside parking lots and local parks in Burbank like the McCambridge recreation center. April do Nascimento is a veteran of several years of kickboxing and Jiu-Jitsu training so the self-defense part of the offering comes second nature. She likes to operate the fitness center in the spirit of a women’s club where the women will meet and socialize on the weekends taking hikes in the Verdugo and surrounding mountains. MoveHer Fitness offers two membership levels with the first offering any 8 classes per month and the second-tier offering unlimited classes every month. Nutrition guides are available for new MoveHer Fitness members but the emphasis is not on weight loss but rather a holistic approach to overall health and fitness.

Reviv’d Wellness Lounge

Reviv’d Wellness Lounge launched its premier service offering on May 2, 2021. The beauty lounge is the first to offer the Prism Light Pod in the Los Angeles metro area (Burbank). Reviv’d Wellness Lounge offers several state-of-the-art cosmetology services, including Red Light Therapy, Cryotherapy, Compression Therapy, and Fibroblast Skin Tightening.

The Local Business Alliance staff visited Reviv’d Wellness Lounge on the last day of August 2021. Immediately as you enter their facility, there is a feeling of a warm, relaxing European Spa. We toured the facility guided by Marina Caradanian, a well known cosmetologist. The technology on display at Reviv’d Wellness was quite remarkable, we had never seen anything like this at any other medical spa.

We were most interested in the Red Light Therapy room which looked like a combination between a tanning room and HAL’s control center from 2001 A Space Odyssey. As Ms . Caradanian instructed, red light therapy is also known as photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT). The bed or light pod technology is all based on LED lighting so there is no noticeable heat or adverse affects to the eyes while deeply penetrating the skin and body. Folks visit Reviv’d Wellness to use the Prism Light Pod for sports therapy, treating arthritis, and healing chronic pain. The prism light pod works its PBMT magic in as little as 15 minutes with a full-body session.

Another very interesting technology on display was the Cryo 4S which offers Cryolipolysis & Muscle Stimulation Therapy. We never knew cryotherapy could be so good. The device uses the best in cryogenics combined with electrical muscle stimulation and LED lighting to generate an overall remarkable improvement in skin tone and appearance. The technologies are all integrated into 8 different topical applicators to run together in each handpiece. Marina Caradanian told us that this state of the art cold therapy could have very therapeutic results and reduce pain and inflammation.

Ms. Caradanian was most enthusiastic about their compression therapy center which, in layman’s terms, is a method of increasing blood circulation throughout the body. This portion of the wellness lounge is used by athletes looking for quick recovery from sports injury and reduction of lactic acids after vigorous workouts. Other visitors to the lounge use the BOA 2 Max compression therapy to reduce the appearance of visible veins. We also learned that compression therapy can relieve pain, reduce the appearance of cellulite, and can increase the body’s oxygen levels.

Reviv’d Wellness Lounge offers a free initial consultation and reportedly is very popular with hockey players and very well known basketball stars. Reviv’d Wellness Lounge joined the Burbank Chamber of Commerce in Summer 2021.

Miso Robotics

In Pasadena, California, a company called Miso Robotics has been working on an innovative device that can cook burgers and fries. Called the Flippy, this robotic arm and hamburger flipping mechanism is designed to take over low-skill cooking jobs with robot automation. The idea of robots taking human jobs is not new or unusual in today’s world. But what makes the Flippy different? Well first off it does both hamburger cooking and french fry frying as it covers two important tasks in the kitchen. The device costs $50,000 and Miso Robotics is already receiving orders for its robot kitchen assistant. Secondly, it doesn’t need supervision from a human because it has sensors all around its body that make sure there are no problems while it cooks food on its own!

One fast-food hamburger chain, White Castle, has already installed eleven of the Flippy devices. Nearer to home, Caliburger of Pasadena is using the Flippy in its kitchens. Two other notable early adopters of Miso Robotics technology are Major League Baseball teams; the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks. The company has been encountering keen interest in regard to the Flippy robot, especially from fast-food restaurants that have had difficulty finding qualified staff and are struggling with the human effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Miso Robotics is reportedly in exploratory talks with several other national burger chains interested in adopting this cost-saving technology.

Miso Robotics has already developed the next generation of the Flippy which is called the Miso ROAR (Robot on a Rail) which costs approximately half of the Flippy. The MISO Roar travels across two two fry stations while being able to access a freezer storage unit. This enables the ROAR to cook several additional foods above and beyond burgers and fries. The ROAR will cook chicken tenders cheese sticks, tater tots, corn dogs and onion rings. MISO estimates the Robot on A Rail can cook and prepare hundreds of human orders per hour based on its enhanced software, sensors, and safety cameras. The icing on the cake is the MISO ROAR’s integration with the company’s proprietary point of sale system.

The Miso Robotics team are alums from Caltech, MIT, UNC at Chapel Hill, and Carnegie Mellon.

Random Acts of Breadness

Random Acts of Breadness is an artisan sourdough bakery located in central Burbank. Artisan is used in the description of this bakery to describe the amount of detail, time, and attention put into baking the sourdough bread from this bakery. Randall Michael Tobin started the business when he became interested in baking based on his desire to give gifts that he had made instead of bought. This desire combined with several books that influenced Mr. Tobin in the art of breadmaking led to him baking sourdough loaves and giving them as gifts. The artisanal sourdough bread baking process differs from the mass-produced bakery sourdough most readers are accustomed to. Even though the Breadness sourdough loaves are priced proportionately to the work that goes into them, demand will undoubtedly grow as word spreads of their fantastic quality.

In November 2016, Mr. Tobin came up with a seed of a question that germinated into a business. “I wonder if I could make sourdough bread?” With the coming holiday season upon him, he desired to create something of value rather than purchase a gift in the store. Mr. Tobin confessed; “I love food and creating healthy meals, but I never made real bread before. So I ordered a packet of organic San Francisco sourdough starter from a website and proceeded to bring it to life over the course of a week. When I made the recipe for the bread that came with the starter, the result looked like a big, flat, gray UFO! I tried it again and got the same result.” The first loaves out of the oven proved disastrous but only leavened Mr. Tobin’s resolve to bake something incredible. In his quest, Mr. Tobin came upon the book Tartine Bread by Chad Robertson. The recipes in Tartine Bread were slightly modified for gourmet, and artisanal purposes by Mr. Tobin and ultimately helped produce his Artisan Sourdough Country Loaf.

Another influential book in what became the Breadness formula is The Plant Paradox by Dr. Steven Gundry. In The Plant Paradox, Dr. Gundry speaks of the dangers of gluten and other similar plant-based proteins called lectins. Lectins are found in many foods popularly regarded as healthy, including nuts, vegetables, fruits, and beans. Dr. Gundry writes that there are important ways in which the danger of lectins can be avoided including a method of artisanal sourdough bread baking that exactly in line with the loaves that Mr. Tobin was already becoming a rockstar by giving away in his bakery’s community. These sourdough baking methods closely resembled ancient European baking processes emphasizing clean organic flours devoid of bran and germ along with natural sourdough starter and a 3-day baking process that demolishes the danger posed by gluten and other harmful lectins. Mr. Tobin was also careful to describe the intricate water filtration system he installed in the Breadness Bakery. The baking process requires a pressurized water supply for the steam injected deck oven. The whole bakery uses water that has had all the toxins and chemicals removed from the water. Randall Tobin credits this baking process with both the superior taste of his bread along with the healthy feeling reported back by his bakery bread consumers.

Based on the immense amount of time Randall Tobin spends baking his artisan sourdough, a visitor to the bakery is left wondering if Mr. Tobin’s objective is to benefit the community or build a profitable business. The company name Random Acts of Breadness first makes one think of kindness until you realize they only produce 48 loaves per day, two days a week. Even though the bakery sold out everything during their first weeks of production (August 2021), the company could be considered the best-kept secret in Burbank. Mr. Tobin only publicized the gourmet bread’s availability within a few block radius of his baker with hand delivered postcards. That secret did not last very long as fans of The Plant Paradox discovered Random Acts of Breadness via Facebook and word of mouth that quickly spread beyond Burbank. Now the bakery has demand for sourdough bread, a five-day production schedule, and nationwide next day shipping. Randall Tobin is enthusiastically keeping up with the demand and is researching his shipping options.

The jostling, eager customers picking up their loaves on a Friday afternoon when the Local Biz Ally photographer was taking pictures for this article might be the best testament to the quality of this bread. Breadness is a micro-bakery that evolved from a deep desire to give crafted gifts. All the baking methods that go into their bread are available in the books detailed in this article. If you have three years to learn, three days to bake, highly purified water, and a high tech steam injection oven, you can bake bread like they do at Random Acts of Breadness. Otherwise, you can order your Artisan Sourdough Country Loaf at the website below.
